WHAT TO EXPECT /ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Every year between September and October in the Park one of the most exciting natural phenomena is renewed, a mysterious and unforgettable wild call: the bellowing of deer in love.
Male deer echo this kind of dull roar in the valleys, to drive away rival males and defend their own harem of females. Suggestions of sounds, colors and perfumes are superimposed on vocal duels engaged to conquer the supremacy of the female harem. By taking part in excursions with the Park's experts, it is possible to see the deer and watch, from a distance that does not create any disturbance, a ritual challenge between two deer or antler fights.

Medium difficulty excursion (from about 6 to 3 ) in mid-altitude areas where it is easier to spot and hear the bellowing deer even during the day. The Park experts show the numerous traces and tell the habits of this fascinating animal. With a little luck, you may even spot eagles circling the sky in search of prey. Packed lunch. Transfer by own means.

WHAT WE SUPPLY

To discover the animals in the woods, a thermal imaging camera will be provided by the Park. Contact can be avoided with a thermal camera because the images will be shown on a screen. A headlight is also needed to safely walk in the woods at night. Please bring one with you. If you don’t have one, you can borrow one of the Park’s that will be disinfected before use.
The price also includes dinner in a traditional malga hut, where you will have a chance to talk about the wildlife with a Stelvio National Park expert.
 

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE

This activity is perfect if you love nature. Suitable for adults and families with children preferably age 10+ .

EQUIPMENT/CLOTHING

Hiking boots, jacket, backpack, waterproof wind jacket, comfortable and warm clothing. 
 

MEETING POINT
  • Excursion in Val di Peio (on Sunday 24 September & 8 October): meeting point at the main headquarters of the Stelvio National Park in Cogolo.
    At the junction to Val di Peio, take the SP 87 provincial road to Cogolo di Peio. At the entrance to the town follow via Roma and continue onwards for approx. 50 meters until you reach n. 65
  • Excursion in Val di Rabbi (on Sunday 1 October): meeting point at the Visitors Center in Rabbi Fonti.Rabbi Fonti along the SP 86 provincial road, just before the thermal spa center.

You will need to take your own vehicle from the meeting point to the starting point of the excursion.
