INTERESTING FACTS/INFO
In the past, Peio had four fully operating water mills. The Molin dei Turri, located in the centre of the village, is now the only one that can be visited and, since summer 2024, it is open weekly.
It has always belonged to the Turri family, handed down from generation to generation. The mill was partly destroyed by an avalanche on December 13, 1916, and later restored by Paolo Turri with the help of his brother, Father Antonio Turri, who managed the accounts and administration.
Together with twelve other buildings, the mill survived a major fire on February 2, 1943, which destroyed 97 houses.
When electricity arrived in Peio, it permanently replaced the old water power that drove the milling mechanisms. The mill operated with electricity until the 1970s. The last miller was Paolo Turri.
In 2018, the mill was purchased by the municipal administration for eco-museum purposes.
The First World War began on July 28, 1914, with the conflict between the Kingdom of Serbia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, of which Trentino was then a part, forcing the people of Val di Sole to become involved.
When Italy entered the war on May 24, 1915, the village of Peio found itself on the front line of the Tyrolean defence front, which ran along glaciers and snowfields at over 3,000 metres of altitude.
The people of Peio thus found the “war at their doorstep,” and the name of the Museum itself aims to highlight the deep involvement of the entire community in this immense conflict that changed the face of the world.
The Peio Museum is one of the few dedicated to the “White War,” focusing on the military events of the First World War that took place at high altitude.
Its collections illustrate the soldiers’ experiences at the front, reconstructing an important part of the history not only of Peio’s small community but of all soldiers who fought on the Great War’s Alpine front.
The museum is part of the Network of Great War Museums of Trentino.
